What to Expect from Your 90-Minute SUP (Stand-up Paddleboard) Tuition Session at St Andrews Lakes

Thinking of giving stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) a go? Whether you’re brand new to the board or looking to sharpen your technique, our 90-minute SUP Tuition is the perfect introduction.

Held in the calm, clear waters of our beautiful lake, our sessions focus on fun, learning, and confidence-building—all in a safe and supportive environment.

1. Introductions & Safety Briefing

We begin every session with a warm welcome and a full safety briefing. Our instructor will walk you through the equipment you’ll be using and provide an overview of the day’s weather conditions, as well as key safety information like shoreline distance limits, safe exit points, and areas to avoid. Safety is our top priority, and we make sure you’re comfortable and informed before stepping onto the water.

2. On-Land Demonstration

Next, we head to the shore for a land-based demo. You’ll learn how to carry your board correctly and launch it safely. Our instructor will guide you through paddle technique – including short paddle strokes, correct stance, foot positioning, and how to steer and stop effectively. You’ll also be shown how to fall safely, recover with confidence, and understand your buoyancy aid and SUP leash. We’ll cover how we communicate on the water, too, so everyone stays connected and safe.

3. On-Water Practice & Demonstration

Time to hit the water! Starting from a kneeling position, you’ll learn how to stand up safely, kneel back down, and perform a self-rescue if needed. Our instructor will be right beside you as you build your confidence with each stroke. You’ll practise efficient paddling techniques, steering, and balance – all while navigating light wind conditions with control and ease.

BY THE END OF THE LESSON, YOU'LL BE ABLE TO...

* Recognise and avoid potential SUP hazards
* Perform a safe self-rescue
* Understand how to paddle efficiently and effectively
* Use weather and water conditions to paddle safely
* Build a strong foundation for future SUP adventures
