Safety and Standards

We understand the risks of such a site, and so safety is our number one priority. That’s why we are accredited through official organisations to ensure our guests are safe.

RYA – Sailing sessions are run by Royal Yachting Association-qualified instructors using official course frameworks.

RLSS UK – All lifeguards are trained to RLSS standards, and we host accredited Open Water Lifeguard courses. We are Gold standard industry-approved!

AALA – Fully licensed by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority to deliver supervised outdoor activities for young people.

NOWCA – Our open water swimming practices follows the NOWCA wristband safety system and best practices.

Beyond our accreditations, we maintain strict on-site safety measures, including our site being equipped with safety boats, buoy lines, CCTV, emergency alarms, and age or height restrictions where required, while all staff are lifeguard-trained, carry PPE and radios, and our zip wire and water quality undergo regular inspections to keep every visit safe and enjoyable.

With stringent Risk Assessments and Safety Policies in place and followed at all times, we have achieved and are proud to be licensed. by the Health & Safety Executives’ Adventure Activities Licensing Service (AALA); Meeting and continuing to exceed the set standards of the rigorous national standards governing adventurous training activities. Full facility and activity risk assessments are available, which we are happy to supply to you, when required.

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is our sports Governing Body; Governing, inspecting and monitoring everything we do. Therefore, all of our instructors have to teach to an extremely high standard. Not only do they hold the relevant RYA qualifications but have years of experience in their specialist field. Supervision ratios have been set by the RYA, with no more than 6 participants to each instructor. Here at St Andrews Lake we are also fortunate to have new instructors coming up through the ranks, meaning that the qualified instructor has regular extra assistance, bringing the supervision ratio down from 6:1 to 6:2.
